It's been a crazy winter. Lots going on, and I found myself lost in deep thought more than I care to remember. Trust me, there have been good things, but also things for me to reflect on.
Enough about that. It's Spring!! Trees are blooming, the tulips and daffodils are coming out, and except for the frigid (40-something) weather today, Spring has been glorious.
Today was my first ever 5K! I finished, I didn't die (or even hurt too terribly bad), and I wasn't last place. ;) My time was 49:46.4 doing a walk/jog combo. I was hoping for under 45 minutes, but I'll take under 50. Next time I'm going to work on beating my time, and eventually I want to jog an entire 5K. Heck, maybe I'll do the half-marathon one day. Time will tell...
Update on TV stuffs: I've started watching Life, and absolutely love it. LOVE it. Still watching Lost, as I figure I need to stick it out at this point. I've pretty much given up on Heroes. Gossip Girl is crazy fun as always. I'm curious to see how Biggest Loser turns out. And I've also been watching Dollhouse. I didn't like it much at first, but it's finally starting to come together better. I'll stick it out until Fox cancels it (which given how Fox treats Joss Whedon shows on Friday nights, it won't be long...). Oh, and 24 has been amazingly awesome again this season.
I've got some more travel coming up. Visiting my brother and some friends next weekend, then conferencing and visiting family in Nashville the next week. I love spending Easter with my sister, as it means coloring eggs and watching her hunt them.
Sadly, I won't get to go to the upcoming MLA conference in Honolulu. But I've got a SoCal/Vegas vacation planned for June, so I will get some beach time before too long. :)
I'm all done with baking banana and zucchini bread. I haven't made as much of those as pumpkin (more tomorrow) or friendship (more next weekend), which is fine, because my freezer probably couldn't handle more. However, the freezer is almost empty of bread now...I mailed off several loaves this morning. Hooray!
I think that next year instead of getting myself in a baking frenzy, I'm going to knit as many prayer shawls as possible. There is a shawl ministry at my church, and I know they'd love to receive some. I figure if I start in November next year, I can get 2-3 done by the first of the year.
I really should get away from the computer now and start tackling the TiVo. I think it's about to pop! I know I've got about 3 episodes of Pushing Daisies to watch...I'm so sad that it got canceled!
As the title suggests, I feel so behind on stuff lately. I finally broke out of my almost-week-long rut of not even reading blogs. Even if I'm not writing, I normally keep up with everyone. I feel a bit better now that I've caught up on that.
I'm three episodes behind on Lost, and three behind on Doctor Who (am watching the current season!). I just watched the Gossip Girl finale and enjoyed it. The Office finale left me wondering what will happen next season...which I suppose is the sign of a good finale!
All is well in regards to the getting-ready-for-surgery process. Papers should be submitted to my insurance company soon, and I'll know more about a surgery date after that. In the meantime, I've been making some dietary changes that make me a bit cranky, though I'm trying to stay positive and know that this is all for the best. It is for the best, right? Good health and all that? I know, I know...
I'm about halfway done with a baby blanket (#1 of 4+ of 2008) and will post a pic as soon as it's finished. I'm planning on doing quite a bit of work on it tomorrow.
I really hated missing MLA this year. Such a bummer. Fortunately, I'm *definitely* going next year, as the travel budget was increased at work, and the conference is in Honolulu. :)
I was given a little pot of catnip and I really need to plant it in one of the pots outside. Anyone want to bet on how long it actually lasts? I've got a notorious black thumb, even though I wish I could plant things and make them grow.
This was quite possibly the most boring update ever. Sorry. I hope writing here helps me get out of this crazy rut. I totally need a vacation, or at least a day at Dollywood. :)
It's been a little while since my last trip. I think my last out-of-state trip was the jaunt to Columbus back in December. Now I'm about to go to pumaviking's wedding in Western Massachusetts. Western Mass. just sounds cold. As in brrrrr!
I've got a packing list made, and will be wearing warm clothing. A bunch of my friends will be there, and I'm so looking forward to seeing everyone again. While I just saw some people in December, it's been much longer than that for others. Plus, this will be the first Jewish wedding that I've ever attended. All I know about Jewish weddings comes from seeing Charlotte get married on Sex and the City, so this will be a new experience for me.
Hmmm...what else is going on... I think only two other people reading this (that I know of, anyway) are watching The Biggest Loser this season. Tonight's episode...WOW. I'm not watching much more TV than that, and am looking forward to Thursday night stuff on NBC coming back next month. I am in need of an Office fix. I might break down and start watching them via Netflix Watch Now before long.
The big news in Knoxville today is that one of the hospitals (Baptist) is closing its inpatient services. At first I was thinking about how much this is going to affect my workplace...we're pretty much at capacity all the time as it is. But it's also not so great for the community as a whole, I think. Will be interesting to see how this all plays out in the next few months.
I've been contemplating joining Facebook. I don't know what's stopping me, other than just being too lazy to do it.
My orthodontist is now saying "summer" as to when I'll get these braces off. Sigh.
I'm super close to having an article ready to submit for publication. I'm working on the final edits and getting the format just right. That's quite a feat. :)
I'm going to visit friends in DC the weekend of June 6. Hooray! I haven't been to DC since July 2006. I am looking forward to exploring the city again. I need to be sure to see what kind of exhibits are going on (last time the Muppets were at one of the Smithsonians!). And, of course, I need to arrange for a dinner at Jaleo. I just looked at their online menu, and they still have my favorite tapas. Mmm...deep fried nuggets of joy...
I think that's all for now. I'll be sure to take pictures this weekend!
...let's catch up!
* I'm getting over a nasty bout of strep throat. It didn't respond to amoxicillin, so I had to go back to the doctor for different antibiotics & more screening test (still negative for flu, now I know that I also don't have mono). I started the new antibiotics just over 24 hours ago and I'm feeling really good. Hooray!
* I need to get back to knitting soon. When I was sick I didn't feel like doing anything (except TV, sometimes...I'm now caught up on Lost), and before that I was too busy to really work on anything. So, back to the needles soon.
* I just now got around to looking up who won best picture at the Oscars. I watched a bit of the show on Sunday, but didn't want to stay up until the end, esp. because I hadn't seen any of the movies.
* I miss Pushing Daisies. I'm glad the writers' strike is over, but I still miss my shows.
* I had a 20 minute conversation with Alex this evening. She is quite the little talker. :) She started a Montessori preschool on Monday, and she LOVES it. A lot. Both days so far, when my dad picked her up, she has asked if she could go back again tomorrow. :) Her 5th birthday was earlier this month, and I need to post a picture of her cake sometime soon.
* Daisy just nudged me to remind me to write on this (you know she's miss green kitty): I read The Omnivore's Dilemma recently. I thought it was an interesting book. I admit that at times it was hard to really get into, but I get the point. No, I'm not a vegetarian now, but I am thinking a lot more about where my food comes from. I think the single worst part was the description of how cows have tummies that are good for digesting grass, and then the description of how they are fed corn instead at the big processing places. I was all "noooooo! it's going to hurt their tummies!" The upshot of this is that now that I'm healthy again (and can actually eat!), I'm going to start truly seeking out food from local farm.
* I realize that for an "update" post this has been rather bland. Sorry.
* Something fun: I'm going to a friend's wedding next month. And several other friends will be there as well, and we'll have our own table or two at the reception. :)
* And there's something else on the horizon that is big news, but I'm not ready to share it in a public place yet. No, it's not another kitten (yet). No, I'm not moving. You'll just have to wait & see.
I can't believe that I haven't said much about fall TV yet. I've finally got my favorites picked and my schedule worked out. I won't have any overlaps until January, which is really nice!
I have dropped a few shows, mostly due to feeling like I was watching too much TV. Please understand that I mean too much *for me* and my "too much" should not be construed as a judgment on those that watch more than me. I like TV as a form of entertainment, really, I do! :)
Mondays will get tricky when 24 comes back in January, but for now, I'm watching How I Met Your Mother and Heroes. I just got all caught up on Heroes last night...I started watching season one earlier this month. What an awesome show!
On Tuesdays I just watch The Biggest Loser. I'm enjoying this season a lot, mostly because I'm exercising now and I don't feel lazy when watching it.
Wednesdays are for Pushing Daisies and Gossip Girl. These are my favorite new shows (in that order). Pushing Daisies is unique and fun (I could probably write a separate entry about why I love it!) and Gossip Girl is total fluff that is different than the books (at least the first 3 books, as that's all I've read so far).
Finally, on Thursdays I watch the NBC shows. Over the summer I started watching My Name Is Earl, 30 Rock, and The Office (I've loved Scrubs for years). The Office cracks me up every week...I love it!
You may be wondering where some of my previous favorite shows have gone. I tried a couple episodes of Private Practice, but kept forgetting to watch it online (as it conflicts with Gossip Girl) so I dropped it. I thought the season premiere of Supernatural was just okay, so it's also been dropped (I figure I can catch up on DVD later if I find out it's been an awesome season). And I hated the season premiere of Grey's Anatomy with a fiery passion. So it's gone, too.
So, that's what I'm watching now. This may change during mid-season when we get more new shows and find out what all has been canceled.
* The final two episodes of Drive are scheduled to be shown back-to-back on July 4. Yes, the night that everyone will be out watching fireworks. Way to go, Fox.
* I finally got around to writing my SRP reviews for the books I've read so far! I struggled with that table of contents thing for a bit, but when it started working, it was wonderful. Yay wiki!
I just realized that it's been a week since I've updated, so here we go...
Gotcha. You thought I had something really cool to talk about tonight. Nope, it's been the same old stuff around here. Work is good, life is good, Daisy is good. I'm going to visit my dad, stepmom, baby sis, and the puppy this weekend.
Here are a few random things:
* June is going by way too fast. Last year I started making Christmas presents in August and that worked out really well. Now I've only got a month and a half to make more stuff for me/learn some new skills before starting presents. If I decide to make presents again this year. Well, I'll be making something...not sure if it will be my traditional gift of loaves of bread (I've done that a few times) and/or fudge and cookies and/or knitting/crocheting things. I like giving (and receiving!) things made by hand. I wrote out my list today, and pretty much the only "for sure" thing is that I'll be making is for my grandpa: a pair of wool socks and/or a hat.
* I got a new cell phone! Same number of course, but this newer phone makes it so much easier to text. Yay! Oh, and probably the most important thing (besides that there were enough credits/in-store rebates that it cost me nothing): it's PINK!
* I made the best cheddar bread tonight that I've ever made. Everything turned out about as close to perfect as I can imagine it. I'm taking a loaf to my dad's (a Father's Day treat!) and leaving the rest of the other loaf for my catsitter.
* I got a sample of a new cat food, Cat Chow Naturals. Daisy loves it! And they carry it at my local grocery store, so I might get it for her next time.
* I've started watching the American version of The Office on with the Netflix "watch now" feature. I can't believe how funny this show is, and that I haven't been watching it all along!
* There are probably other little things that I could write about, but that would then qualify this blog for one of the most boring ones around. So I think I'll stop for now.
...and overcoming a childhood fear. That's what I've done this week by watching some recent episodes of Doctor Who. I'm only four episodes into season 1, and already call myself a fledgling fan.
You see, Doctor Who scared me as a child. It was weird and creepy, and was the source of my very first nightmare. Even though slytherinlibrarian, redheadedali, and readingjag went on and on and on about the hotness of the new Doctor and the awesomeness of the script, acting, and everything I resisted the thought of giving it a try. In my mind, Doctor Who=Scary. The End.
A couple months ago I had a dream about watching the series and it was okay. So it got added to my Netflix queue. I read that even the wonderful Neil Gaiman thought the show was scary as a child. Then season/series finales were over and the discs started arriving. The opening music make me squirm a bit...amazing how music gets repressed in the brain. Then...magic. I e-mailed/texted my friends immediately to let them know that I wasn't scared and that the show was AWESOME.
So if you need to find me this summer in the evenings, you'll likely find me at home riding on my exercise bike or knitting a sock. While watching Doctor Who.
Gilmore Girls has been canceled. This is not a surprise to me at all, but I'm still a little sad. It's been one of my favorite shows for several years, and now it's ending.
I just hope the finale is good (it's May 15...so soon!).
