It's really snowing here. Big fluffy flakes that look super-soft. It's sticking to the rooftops, grassy areas, and tops of cars. I actually don't mind the snow right now because I don't have to leave the apartment until tomorrow morning. I'm just watching it from my bedroom window while goofing off online, listening to music, and drinking my second cup of tea. I'll be exercising soon, but for now, I like chilling out and watching the snow.
Sadly, I didn't document this past weekend with photographs. My dad and Alex came to visit me yesterday. We went to the Lady Vols game (yay, we won!) and had a great night. They left early this morning, and I'm glad I'll be seeing them again soon for Alex's birthday (she'll be *6*!!). Daisy is taking a long morning nap to recover. Actually, she did great...Alex was calmer with her, and Daisy rewarded her by not spending all of the time under the bed.
I know there is more to update on, but for now, I'm just going to watch the snow...
I babysat my little sister this weekend (she's 5.5, will be 6 in February). She, like most kids her age, is starting to get excited about Christmas.
An actual conversation that took place this morning:
Me: What do you want for Christmas, Alex?
Alex: A dinosaur.
Me: What else do you want?
Alex: Ming-Ming.
Me: Anything else?
Alex: No, that's two things. That's enough!
My dad was also blown away by this. She just doesn't ask for stuff...this is the first year she's even asked for anything for Christmas. In this consumer culture, it's so refreshing to see this mindset just happen.
If I ever have children, I hope I can instill this kind of mindset in them somehow.
I keep on thinking of things to say here, but then don't take the time to write them. It doesn't help that Vox is blocked at work now so I can't write on my lunch break anymore.
Today was a disturbing day because I found out this morning about the church shooting in Knoxville. Crazy and so so so sad. It's not my church, but I have considered visiting many times.
On to something happier...
I've had two fabulous visits with my sister this month. The first was at her place (where she got to experience a live fireworks show for the first time) and the second was here at my apartment. She stayed with me for two nights, and then I took her to the cabin in the Smokies where my dad & stepmom were staying. We all went to Dollywood, and had so much fun. Her favorite ride was the Blazing Fury, a longtime favorite of my brother & mine. Whenever it ended, she looked at me and said "Let's go again!" So we did. :) We also rode the carousel, swings, teacups-type ride, ferris wheel, and all the water rides except the brand new one. She really loved the Mountain Slidewinder.
Here are a few pics...one is of her in her church dress doing her "funny face." Next is her being a Tennessee cheerleader. Finally, she is rolling out pizza dough for the cheese pizza we made together from scratch.
My brother has moved to Ohio, which is awesome, because he is near Food/Crafts/Books Girl! I'll be visiting him when I go up for her baby shower next month. :)
I'm working on re-reading the Narnia chronicles, and am on the Dawn Treader. So far, so good. It's been sooooo long since I've read these books, and I'm enjoying them all over again.
I need to add "updating the blog" to my list of habits that I'm trying to learn & re-learn. I'll definitely post again when I know more about the surgery, and hopefully will think of something to post before that!
First of all, here is a picture I took of myself yesterday with my new webcam at work:
The reason I got a webcam is because I'm going to be one of the presenters for a search series in my library's region. Apparently, someone thinks I'm an expert searcher. ;) I can pass on the info if anyone is interested in the webinars (I'm mostly looking at you, Een...).
Speaking of Een, she just reminded me with her post about skin cancer that I am overdue for my dermatologist annual mole check. I will get that done sometime this year. Lately I've been going to so many doctors that I've pushed aside some of the regular stuff.
I'm nearly done with baby blanket #2, and have decided to use the same pattern for #4. I bought the yarn for #3 yesterday, and will be starting it soon. That's all I'm going to say about #3 until after the shower, because I know the mother of the baby it's for reads this blog. :)
I'll be seeing my little sister this weekend for the 4th of July. She got on the phone yesterday telling me about how excited she is about coming to stay with me soon (later this month) "staying with you and your kitty." I told her that I'd see her on Thursday and she was all "yay yay yay!" We're going to have a good time.
Oh, I knew there was something else. I just got an article published in the Journal of Electronic Resources in Medical Libraries! My citation is in CINAHL! Exciting! I'm now reworking the article that got rejected earlier this year, and plan to resubmit it soon. And I need to get my CV updated...I try to do that at least once a year, but it seems like a lot has been going on professionally lately.
It's almost 10:00p, which means almost bedtime. Good night!
...let's catch up!
* I'm getting over a nasty bout of strep throat. It didn't respond to amoxicillin, so I had to go back to the doctor for different antibiotics & more screening test (still negative for flu, now I know that I also don't have mono). I started the new antibiotics just over 24 hours ago and I'm feeling really good. Hooray!
* I need to get back to knitting soon. When I was sick I didn't feel like doing anything (except TV, sometimes...I'm now caught up on Lost), and before that I was too busy to really work on anything. So, back to the needles soon.
* I just now got around to looking up who won best picture at the Oscars. I watched a bit of the show on Sunday, but didn't want to stay up until the end, esp. because I hadn't seen any of the movies.
* I miss Pushing Daisies. I'm glad the writers' strike is over, but I still miss my shows.
* I had a 20 minute conversation with Alex this evening. She is quite the little talker. :) She started a Montessori preschool on Monday, and she LOVES it. A lot. Both days so far, when my dad picked her up, she has asked if she could go back again tomorrow. :) Her 5th birthday was earlier this month, and I need to post a picture of her cake sometime soon.
* Daisy just nudged me to remind me to write on this (you know she's miss green kitty): I read The Omnivore's Dilemma recently. I thought it was an interesting book. I admit that at times it was hard to really get into, but I get the point. No, I'm not a vegetarian now, but I am thinking a lot more about where my food comes from. I think the single worst part was the description of how cows have tummies that are good for digesting grass, and then the description of how they are fed corn instead at the big processing places. I was all "noooooo! it's going to hurt their tummies!" The upshot of this is that now that I'm healthy again (and can actually eat!), I'm going to start truly seeking out food from local farm.
* I realize that for an "update" post this has been rather bland. Sorry.
* Something fun: I'm going to a friend's wedding next month. And several other friends will be there as well, and we'll have our own table or two at the reception. :)
* And there's something else on the horizon that is big news, but I'm not ready to share it in a public place yet. No, it's not another kitten (yet). No, I'm not moving. You'll just have to wait & see.
...but I was too busy to take pictures! This past weekend I babysat my little sis and her puppy. We had a great time! It's amazing just how much she's grown up since I did this weekend babysitting thing last year. She's more helpful, can do more, is totally potty-trained, and is possibly even more fun. We played outside and took walks, played Candy Land and Memory, watched Wonder Pets and Dora (and some college football, of course), and at one point fell asleep together on the couch while watching Cinderella. Of course we were very happy for my dad & stepmom to get home, we had fun together. I'm glad we'll get to hang out again on Thanksgiving. :)
And because Wednesday is for pictures, here is a picture of SandyDog sniffing at something in the front yard:
Have you ever seen a Boohbah cake? If not, here is your chance:
It was a yummy cake...chocolate with white icing (airbrushed with lots of color!). Alex was tickled as could be with the cake, but most of all with the figures on top of the cake.
I still can't believe she's 4 years old already! We had such a fun weekend together, and I can't wait to see her again sometime soon.
I can't believe my baby sister is 4 years old today!!! We're going to celebrate more this weekend, and I'm very excited about seeing her again.
Below is a picture taken sometime over the holidays (that's one of the hats I made her for Christmas). One of my colleagues suggested that she was rolling her eyes at the result of the Outback Bowl.
